Body Map | 2014

The purpose of this work was to map the places that define my identity. Give them form, a limit, and a frontier. Give them a body, an existence. These maps are a result of routes, places in space and time that made me what I am today. To make these maps “mine”, it seemed obvious that I had to give a part of myself, of my body, to accomplish them. Using my own blood, as a substance that “embodies” these maps, seemed like the most truthful way of doing it. The objective of using this material was a question of coherence…- conveying the poetic notion that our blood gives form to our most intrinsic and truthful identity. These places are all marks, of my identity, marks that are intended to be visible, like scars, like open wounds. These fragments, when put together, form a whole, which Is my identity. My back is a protected “place”, a past “place”. They are “back there”, but still they are present, such as these maps. The materialization in the jewel, as a pin, is to be worn as a token, throughout the whole body.
